Diana Scherer

Voor haar Nurture Studies liet Diana Scherer zich inspireren door 17de-eeuwse encyclopedieën waarin planten werden afgebeeld met wortel en al. Zij kweekte haar planten echter niet in de volle grond maar in een vaas. Aan de bloem die in zes maanden tijd uit het zaadje is gegroeid, zie je dat niet af. Maar wel aan de wortelkluit, die perfect de vorm echoot van de vaas, het ultieme cultuurobject. De afzonderlijke werken dragen data als titel die de precisie verraden van een verzamelaar die de natuur inventariseert.

For her Nurture Studies, Diana Scherer was inspired by 17th-century encyclopedias in which plants were depicted with their roots intact. However, she did not grow her plants in open soil, but in a vase. You wouldn’t notice this from the flower, which has grown from a seed over the course of six months, but you can see it in the root system, which perfectly echoes the shape of the vase—the ultimate cultural object. Each individual work is titled with a date, revealing the precision of a collector cataloguing nature.
