Lisa van Casand

In haar ‘botanische martelkamer’ stelt Lisa van Casand haar verzameling kamerplanten bloot aan stressvolle omstandigheden: gif, kokend water, vuur, azijn en – zoals in dit geval – zoutzuur. Met een speciale camera legt ze de schrikreactie vast die tot uiting komt in fluorescerend en voor het blote oog onzichtbaar chlorofyl. Deze combinatie van wetenschap en kunst opent de deur naar een onvermoede wereld en communicatie met andere levensvormen. Voor dit werk kreeg Van Casand in 2017 de Heden Startprijs, de onderscheiding die Heden jaarlijks uitreikt aan een uitmuntende afstudeerder van de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in Den Haag.

In her ‘botanical torture chamber,’ Lisa van Casand exposes her collection of houseplants to stressful conditions: poison, boiling water, fire, vinegar, and—in this case—hydrochloric acid. Using a special camera, she captures their stress response, revealed through fluorescent chlorophyll that is invisible to the naked eye. This fusion of science and art opens the door to an unexpected world and a form of communication with other life forms. For this work, Van Casand received the Heden Start Award in 2017, an annual prize presented by Heden to an outstanding graduate of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
