Martin Effert

Een Noord-Europees landschap is voor Martin Effert nooit een neutraal decor, hoe lieflijk het ook oogt. Er zijn altijd sporen te vinden van kwalijk menselijk handelen, zoals resten van loopgraven of concentratiekampen. In het licht van de extreemrechtse toe-eigening van het ongerepte woud als nationalistisch symbool krijgt zelfs het oerbos in deze foto iets schuldigs. Effert fotografeerde ’s nachts met een extreem lange sluitertijd. De oranje lantarenverlichting van de nabije snelweg zorgt voor een spookachtig effect, een voorbode van het kwaad dat om de hoek loert.*

A Northern European landscape is never a neutral backdrop for Martin Effert, no matter how idyllic it may appear. Traces of harmful human activity are always present—such as remnants of trenches or concentration camps. In light of the far-right appropriation of the untouched forest as a nationalist symbol, even the primeval forest in this photograph takes on a sense of guilt. Effert photographed the scene at night using an extremely long exposure time. The orange streetlights from a nearby highway create a ghostly effect, a harbinger of the evil lurking just around the corner.
