Roland Sips

Een ‘grafisch wonderkind’ werd Roland Sips (1954-2012) genoemd door collega-kunstenaars. Er was niets dat hij niet kon tekenen, met potlood of penseel. Om zijn grenzen te verleggen, zocht de meestertekenaar steeds nieuwe uitdagingen op. Zoals deze spiegel in een halletje. Het is een ogenschijnlijk banaal onderwerp dat er niet direct om vraagt vereeuwigd te worden. Maar de generfde houtstructuur, de opkrullende post-it en natuurlijk de lastige vertekeningen in die bolle spiegel vergen het uiterste van Sips’ ambachtelijke kunnen. Met een beetje moeite zie je hem tevreden glimlachen in het spiegelbeeld.

Roland Sips (1954–2012) was described by fellow artists as a “graphic prodigy.” There was nothing he could not draw, whether with pencil or brush. Always looking to push his boundaries, the master draftsman continually sought out new challenges. Such as this mirror in a small hallway. It is an ostensibly banal subject, not something that immediately cries out to be immortalised. Yet the grain of the wood, the curling post-it note and, of course, the tricky distortions in the convex mirror push Sips’ craftsmanship to its limits. With a little effort, you can make out his satisfied smile in the reflection.
